Turn your passion for wildlife into action!

Every summer, Vestmannaeyjar welcomes millions of Atlantic puffins as they return to the islands to breed and raise their chicks. While this remarkable season is a sign of a healthy breeding colony, it is also one of the busiest times for our rescue team. During the breeding season, puffins arrive at the sanctuary after becoming disorientated by the islands lights. some arrive injured, entangled in fishing gear, or contaminated by oil and other pollutants. Others are found weak, exhausted or unable to survive without specialist care.

Our team provides expert rehabilitation with the aim of returning every healthy puffin to the wild, giving these iconic seabirds the best possible chance to continue their incredible journey.

Whether you're pursuing a career in conservation, taking a gap year, or simply looking for an unforgettable wildlife experience, this is your chance to make a genuine difference.

"Volunteering during puffin season is one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. Every rescued puffin has a story, and knowing you've helped give it a second chance to return to the wild makes every moment worthwhile." - Sarah, 2025 volunteer

What does a Puffin Rescue Crew volunteer actually do?

As a Puffin Rescue volunteer, you'll play a vital role in the day-to-day care of rescued seabirds while helping visitors connect with our conservation work.

From supporting rehabilitation behind the scenes to inspiring guests with the stories of the puffins in our care, every task contributes to giving these incredible birds the best possible chance of returning to the wild.

Some of the daily tasks could include;

  • Assisting with enclosure maintenance/cleaning, this will involve but not limited to washing kennels, syphoning the larger enclosures, laundry, surface cleans...
  • Assist in food preparation for the hospital birds that are not undergoing treatment. This will include the breakout in the afternoon for the next day as well as additionally prepping fish for the individuals that day.
  • Assist in the release of birds back into the wild following their successful rehabilitation.
  • Contact the public that would like to know any updates regarding the result of their birds recovery.
  • Involved in guest interactions with visitors on site and the local community regarding the puffins as well as the general site.

Every puffin that arrives at the sanctuary has the potential to return to the wild with the right care and support. By assisting with their daily rehabilitation, you are directly contributing to the survival of individual birds that have been injured, oiled or otherwise unable to cope in the wild. Your help also helps reduce pressure on the veterinary and animal care teams, allowing them to focus on birds requiring specialist treatment.

Beyond the rehabilitation work, your interactions with visitors and members of the local community help raise awareness of the challenges puffins face and inspire others to protect Iceland's marine environment.

Together, these efforts make a real difference...not only to the puffins in our care, but to the future of this iconic species. Go Team Puffin!
