Hours & Information

For 2021 we are open select Fall dates.

Fall opening hours are from 10:00 to 16:00 on Saturday and 13:00 to 16:00 on Sunday.

November and December 2021 the Visitor Centre will be open on select dates:

November 6, 7, 13 & 14

December 17-23 & 26- 30

Groups of 10 or more interested in visiting outside these hours can call to book private opening times at +354 620 2724.

Summer seasonal Visitor Centre Hours are Monday- Saturday 10:00 to 16:00 and Sunday 13:00 to 16:00.

The Visitor Centre is open daily for Summer season, from April to October.

2022 Booking Dates will open by December 1, 2021.



Bay Trips

Bay Trips by boat to see the Sea Sanctuary for 2022 will open in December 2021.

These tours begin at 13:00 daily and are subject to weather and minimum participation requirements.

The boat trips last approximately 30 minutes and are guided by a member of the Beluga Sanctuary Care Team.

Getting Here:

Our Sanctuary is located on the beautiful island of Heimaey in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago off the south coast of Iceland.

It is a 2 hour drive from Reykjavik to the ferry terminal at Landeyjahöfn, near Seljalandsfoss Waterfall.

Herjolfur Ferry for people and/or vehicles from Landeyjahöfn to Vestmannaeyjar. Journey time approx. 35 minutes.

Public transport to the ferry's harbors is available, with buses departing from Mjódd in Reykjavík on this schedule. For additional information please call 540-2700 or visit their website at www.straeto.is.  

For those arriving via Cruise ship, our Visitor Centre is a 5-10 minute walk from the harbour terminal on level ground.

COVID Update Regarding Opening Hours:  

The Visitor Centre operates based on the latest guidance from the Icelandic Directorate of Health, which was updated August 28, 2021:

There are gathering limits of 200 people in effect. Physical distancing of 1 meter is required and masks must be worn wherever the one-metre social distancing rule cannot be observed between individuals.

We are continuing enhanced cleaning procedures and may limit the capacity inside the visitor centre for the health and well-being of our staff at any time.  Unaccompanied children (Under 14) will not be admitted. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
