Welcome to our Beluga Whale Sanctuary
The SEA LIFE Trust is a registered charity (no. 1175859) working globally to protect the world’s oceans and the amazing marine life that lives within them.
The SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary was created in partnership with Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) with the aim of providing formerly captive beluga whales with a safe and more natural home.
We hope to lead the way and encourage the rehabilitation of more captive whales into natural environments, bringing an end to whale and dolphin entertainment shows in the future. This change could potentially transform the lives of over 3,000 whales and dolphins currently housed in traditional captive facilities or performing in shows around the world.
Our Sanctuary’s first residents, Little White and Little Grey, travelled 6,000 miles from their previous home in a Shanghai aquarium via air, land and sea to the Sanctuary, located in a large, natural bay on Heimaey Island, just off the south coast of Iceland. You can find out more about their epic journey here.
The Sanctuary also provides a permanent home to injured puffins at our onsite Puffin Rescue Centre. When visiting the Sanctuary, you can experience these wonderful marine animals up close and personal and learn all about their individual stories.
